LASERVISION's plastic laser safety eyewear is light weight, offers a wide field of view and tends to be less expensive than alternative filter types. The protection afforded by plastic filters is generally lower than for glass filters which limits their use against high power lasers. Plastic filters can also posses a higher degree of coloration than glass filters.
Both plastic and glass filters are used widely in laser safety eyewear but the damage mechanisms are quite different when exposed to a laser beam. If the irradiance is high enough, a plastic filter will carbonise and will be penetrated quickly. Because of this, plastic filters are best for protection against low power lasers. Laser safety eyewear with plastic filters possess a very low weight which promotes a high degree of wearing comfort. In most cases, the eyewear consists of a single shield that can generally be worn over prescription glasses.
