LASERVISION's wide range of absorbing mineral glass filters provides the highest optical densities and protection against even high power lasers. The visible light transmission of a mineral glass filter is generally higher than for an equivalent plastic filter and several mineral glass filters can be combined in one lens for protection over an extended wavelength range.
Both plastic and glass filters are used widely in laser safety eyewear but the damage mechanisms are quite different when exposed to a laser beam. If the irradiance is high enough, a glass filter will break due to thermally induced stress. This is why LASERVISION glass filters are enhanced with a lamination layer to maintain laser protection and avoid injuries caused by glass splinters. Even a cracked filter will keep its optical density as long as the pieces remain together. Glass filters are clearly superior to plastic filters in terms of the thermal stability of the filter material, which is why they are particularly suitable for continuous wave lasers (CW operation) at medium to high powers. Mineral glass filters are the only option for providing the necessary levels of protection demanded by standards for use with high power lasers.
It is possible to combine different absorbing glass filters in order to customise the laser safety eyewear to a specific application. LASERVISION's back catalogue contains over 6,000 custom filters so we like to think we have a filter or combination of filters available for protection against any type and power of laser. The thickness and therefore the weight of the combined filters does have an impact on the wearing comfort of the eyewear. LASERVISION offers accessory head bands and a head support system for those of its frame styles that employ the Duoflex temple adaptor which spreads the load of heavy eyewear over the wearer's head and helps to reduce fatigue.
