Metrics & Test Methods for SSL

23 Octobert 2009: Pro-Lite was invited to give a talk on testing solid state lighting (SSL) at the Ultra Efficient Lighting seminar held during the Photonex exhibition. The talk reviewed the IES LM 79 standard which defines best practice for testing SSL.

Watts wrong with the Lumen?

28 May 2009: "Sheer Lumenacy - EU to replace watts with continental lumens". This bit of creative EU bashing by the Daily Mail refers to the planned change in the labelling of light bulbs which will soon be specified according to the light they emit rather than the power they consume. No more convoluted explanations which correlate the output of a 12 Watt compact fluorescent with a 60 Watt incandescent bulb. Both emit 800 lumens - simple really. Great headline, though.

Hard Talk - a Measure of Free Trade

9 February 2009: Pro-Lite was invited to write the Hard Talk column for the February/March 2009 issue of Electro Optics magazine. We chose as our theme the importance in business of sharing specifications in an unambiguous way and the problems that can occur when this doesn't happen. It all started off with a chap called Napoleon Bonapart, apparently. » More

Selfridges Building, Birmingham

The Mail Sees Red

17 October 2008: The Daily Mail saw red at the alleged lack of patriotism of the Selfridges store in Birmingham. At night, it is normally illuminated in blue. It can also be lluminated in other hues to mark special occasions such as Gay Pride and St Patrick’s Day. The Mail argued that the building should be illuminated in red to mark St George’s Day. The building can indeed be illuminated with red, but the wall tiles have a blue tint, hence the building appears pink. This is a perfect illustration of colour rendering.

Bentley Flying Spur Interior

Making the Best Better

26 August 2008: Bentley chose Pro-Lite to supply a ProMetric CCD imaging photometer to help in the development of its cars’ interior and exterior lighting, instrument panels and infotainment displays.ProMetric photometers are powerful, CCD-based light and colour measurement instruments that provide for vastly increased productivity compared with traditional “spot” photometers. A CCD-based photometer can measure millions of points simultaneously. » More

Car Headlight

Helping Ring to See the Light

26 August 2008: Ring Automotive Ltd needed a way of measuring the performance of their aftermarket car headlamp bulbs. Traditionally, the illumination performance of a headlamp has been determined using a goniophotometer, but this was just too slow and expensive for Ring. Instead, Ring turned to Pro-Lite for a more productive solution. This took the form of a ProMetric CCD imaging photometer which can measure millions of angles simultaneously. » More

Integrating Sphere

A Simple Solution to Complex Light Measurements

8 July 2008: The integrating sphere was originally invented in 1892 by British scientist W E Sumpner. Today, integrating spheres are widely used to simplify the measurement of light sources, in calibrating imaging and remote sensing equipment and in testing the optical properties of materials. » More
